About me

My name is Yitz, and I am currently a Ph.D. student in the Religion Department at Princeton, studying Religions of Mediterranean Antiquity. Before coming to Princeton in fall of 2016 I spent six years studying in the Talmud and Religion departments at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. My dissertation topic is still fluid; for now I can say that I hope to bring together my two main research interests – rabbinic textuality, particular as it changes over time, and the religious history of the Jews in the 5th-8th centuries. My forthcoming book, based on my Hebrew University MA thesis, deals with the development of Jewish liturgy and attitudes towards ritual.

I co-edit and contribute to The Talmud Blog. I also occasionally write on current events, particularly goings-on in and around Israel/Palestine.

I live in Princeton with my wife, Daphna, and our son, Shai Aviv.
